European Parliament backs Paris 2024 [fr]
The Paris 2024 Committee, received the support of the European Parliament after presenting its project on June 6, showing more than ever its ability to bring people together, in France and on the international stage.
Less than 100 days from the International Olympic Committee vote in Lima on September 13 which will determing the host city of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games , the Paris 2024 committee earned another major supporter on Tuesday, June 6.
The Paris 2024 committee received the official support of the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, as well as the official support of the European Parliament’s sport intergroup through its co-presidents Marc Tarabella and Santiago Fisas.
The Paris 2024 delegation led by Bernard Lapasset, and accompanied by French Minister of Sports, Laura Flessel, shared details of its project in Brussels with the sports intergroup, which brings together 92 MEPs from 21 countries and four European parlaimentary groups.
This new support comes just days after the European Minister of Sport warmly welcomed the Paris 2024 project at a May 23 presentation by Laura Flessel and her counterparts in Brussels.
The Paris 2024 committee thereby took another step forward, showing yet again the unifying nature of the French bid.
Its focus on sutainability, desire to put sport at the heart of society and the strong social heritage aspect, the Paris 2024 project embodies the values of the European Union and fits squarely into the objectives of the Europe 2020 Strategy.
Paris 2024 thus confirmed its ability to unite European States and citizens around its project and its values of sharing.
Bernard Lapasset, co-président du comité Paris 2024 :
"We are very happy to be able to present our project before the MEPs and to be able to count on the support of the parliament, through its president, Antonio Tajani. Paris 2024 is a project meant to be shared in France, in Europe, and around the world. The support of the European Parliament is another sign of the unity around our candidacy."
Laura Flessel, Minister of Sport :
"The Paris 2024 project goes beyond France. I am proud of the enthusiasm it has aroused among our European neighbours, as the Council of Ministers of Sport of the European Union on May 23 and the MEPs today have both shown. This support makes Paris 2024 a unifying project with values that bring us together as Europeans."
