French artist Seth at SPECTRUM Street Art Festival [fr]
Paris based artist Julien Malland began painting murals in the 20th arrondissement of Paris in the mid-90s under the street name Seth. Known for his creation of characters, Seth will participate in the SPECTRUM Festival in Christchurch, taking place from the 12th of December 2015 until the 17th of April 2016.
As his contribution to Spectrum during the first two weeks of December, Seth will create both internal and external murals including on a 10sqm wall in the main hall and on one of the giant spray cans allocated to each artist, as well as on an external wall in the Christchurch city centre.
As a graduate of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs of Paris (ENSAD) Seth published “Kapital, one year of graffiti in Paris” in collaboration with Gauthier Bischoff in 2000, the best-selling book about French graffiti. Together, they founded “Wasted Talent” a publishing house specialising in monographs of urban artists.
Since 2003, Seth has been venturing across the world in order to meet and exchange with street artists from different cultures, to broaden his horizons on life and on mural painting. As a result of this experience he has been compelled to draw simple characters, mostly children, which are in some way connected to the chaotic environment in which they are revealed. His approach aims to arouse an artistic dialogue, whether it is collaboration with local urban artists or a learning process of traditional techniques from local craftsmen.
In addition, Seth is the presenter, author and director of “Les nouveaux explorateurs”, a TV show produced by Canal+, each show focusing on a country and its local mural artists. His travels during the last two years have been narrated in a book he authored, “Extramuros”.
The French Embassy in Wellington is proud to have supported the participation of Seth in the SPECTRUM Festival.
