Inaugural France/NZ creative symposium to be held [fr]

On 18-24 September 2016, a France/New Zealand symposium involving seven French creative professionals and organisations will take place in Auckland and Wellington. It will explore aspects of the broad rubric of creativity as a driver of, and way of coping with, increasingly rapid societal and technological changes.

These first contacts, besides providing an opportunity for sharing of ideas and best practices around creative ecologies, will lay the ground for French and New Zealand organisations to engage in a deeper dialogue . Antipodes thus aims to become a yearly event providing new opportunities for French / New Zealand collaboration across creative disciplines in the future.

The conversation will focus on what happens at the interface of social innovation, technological changes and creative practice. How are two emergent and integrative phenomena, the ubiquity of the digital and the rise of design as an integrative practice, redefining what creativity means and how creative people work? How do different rhythms and settings of social life (the city, academia, the economy, mainstream and sub-cultures…) interact to create new experiences, and what is the role of creative arts in this process? How does the slow pace of research foster creative innovation?

Universities play a crucial role in the creative arts and industries, combining thought leadership, facilitation, collaboration, research, teaching and advocacy. This programme of collaborations will occur under the combined auspices of Colab at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT), the College of Creative Arts at Massey University (CoCA - Wellington) and the French Embassy in New Zealand. It will also include city and regional organisations that are involved with the development of creative ecologies. The programme will include: presentations, panel discussions, on-site visits and meetings with all stakeholders of these creative cities.

Objectives and expected outcomes

  • increasing mutual knowledge around ecosystem and capacity building, policy-making, long term strategy for creativity, and the sharing of ideas and best practices around their development and implementation.
  • enhancing direct connections between academic and research organisations in the field of creativity.
  • building an annual platform for collaborations between artists, scientists, creative technologists, academics, researchers, and businesses from France and New Zealand.
  • generating long-term partnerships and collaborative projects between the two countries.

Antipodes Auckland symposium: September 19th, 2016 | 11:30am – 5:30pm | AUT City Campus

Colab will host the Auckland leg (18-21 September) of the Antipodes programme. Colab is the collaboratory for Design and Creative Technologies at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT), New Zealand. Its aim is to encourage researchers, students and stakeholders to imagine, construct, articulate and navigate rapidly changing social, economic, technological and career environments. Colab includes a diverse community of creative people, working together in an environment from which new ideas emerge on a daily basis. Colab researchers come from a range of backgrounds, including art, design, computer science, animation, game design, engineering, mechatronics, textiles, business and organisational development.

The highlight of the Antipodes Auckland programme will be the free public symposium. Register now to share ideas and explore the role creativity in the digital age has to play in research, innovation and in engaging communities. Presentations by representatives of the seven French organisations will be complemented by key organisations in Auckland’s creative ecosystem including; Auckland War Memorial Museum, Auckland Art Gallery, ART Venture, High Tech Youth, Digital Art Live, Auckland Libraries and AUT’s Te Ara Poutama and Colab. The day includes short presentations, a networking lunch and three panel conversations:

• Creation innovation and the digital age - What is the relationship between creativity and innovation? How are digital technologies effecting creative production, distribution and reception?

• Creation and Social engagement - How can creative practices and creative technologies be utilised to help develop stronger communities?

• Research Creation - How is documentation and communication of research changing in light of the emergence of practice based research and new technologies?

Antipodes Wellington symposium: September 22nd, 2016 | 9:00am – 3.15pm | Massey College of Creative Arts

The Wellington leg (21-24 September) of the Antipodes exchange is being organised and hosted by Massey University’s College of Creative Arts. The College is number one in New Zealand for design and visual art research, ranked 3rd by RED DOT, the international design awards agency, and is the first art and design school outside North America to be awarded “substantial equivalency” by the US accreditation body NASAD. The College comprises the School of Design and School of Art, and the newly established School of Music and Creative Media Production.

The Antipodes symposium in Wellington on Thursday 22 September and on the morning of Friday 23 September includes sessions open to the public. Topics include:

• creative entrepreneurship - the contribution of art, media, design and music to the burgeoning entrepreneurial economy. Panellists: Rollo Wenlock, the CEO of Wipster; Allana Krause, co-founder of Loomio and a director of the Enspiral Foundation; and Tui Te Hau, general manager of Mahuki, the innovation space at New Zealand’s national museum Te Papa.

• re-imagining technologies - how new or augmented existing technologies create new means of connectedness and ways of imaging our world. Panellists: Peter Walter of local firm Point Zero, and academics from the College of Creative Arts.

• public programming - how creative practices work with other disciplines to create new and exciting public outcomes. Panellists: Shelagh Magadza, artistic director of the New Zealand Festival, Professor Chris Bennewith of Massey’s College of Creative Arts, and Mark Amery, co-founder of Letting Space and one of New Zealand’s leading art commentators.

• the role of the art school as a place of provocation/performed engagements - creative practices that propose different ways of thinking and give a different perspective on contemporary life.

In addition, a roundtable session will provide an opportunity for leaders in Wellington’s creative ecology to share experiences and insights with the French delegation, and the delegation will visit Mahuki, the recently established innovation hub in Te Papa, New Zealand’s national museum.

Futur en Seine: Camille Pène, Director.
Futur en Seine (Paris) is the biggest festival dedicated to digital innovation in Europe, free and open to all. During ten days it shows each year the latest digital innovations to French and international professionals and to the general public.

Le Lieu du Design: Stéphane Simon, CEO.
Le Lieu du Design, based in Paris, is a public and nonprofit organization created in 2009 by the Paris Design Council to help small businesses integrating a design strategy as a factor of added value and to collaborate with design agencies and design schools. It acts as a dedicated platform to exchanging views on industrial and green design open to professionals of design, industry, students and the general public.

La Générale: Emmanuel Ferrand, Chairperson.
La Générale is a Paris-based artistic, political and social co-operative, a cultural factory and laboratory and a key element of the Parisian creative landscape.

Le Fresnoy: Eric Prigent, Digital Studies Director.
Le Fresnoy - Studio national des arts contemporains (Lille) is a postgraduate educational institution providing access to artistic, audiovisual, and multimedia production and distribution to advanced students from a wide range of creative disciplines and from some 45 countries. It offers a barrier-free approach to audiovisual and multimedia artistic disciplines in a theoretical, historical, and technical continuum, from photography through video and cinema to multimedia and the digital arts.

Le Shadok: Geraldine Farage, Director.
Le Shadok (Strasbourg) is a creative platform for digital media dedicated to supporting a large scope of innovative projects initiated by artists, businesses, students, researchers and the local community. Its ambition is to create a user-friendly environment to boost talent and creativity, and address from the point of view of users the issues raised by the digital revolution and the generalization of new technologies.

MOPA : Julien Deparis, CEO.
A world-renowned school of animation and computer graphics, MOPA (Arles) always strives to stimulate creativity, breaking down the divisions between skills and sectors by ever renewing partnerships and encouraging collaboration.

Villa Arson: Amel Nafti, Director, Academic and Research.
Based in Nice, South of France, Villa Arson was conceived from its beginnings as a new type of art institution, which brought together an art school, an exhibition center, a site for artists in residence and a specialized library.
