The Minister for Overseas France Annick Girardin has welcomed On 30 October 2017 the admission of New Caledonia as an associate member of UNESCO.

New Caledonia is the first French overseas territory to become an associate member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

This admission was announced by state members during the 39th General conference held in Paris from October 27th to November 14th.

Nine years after the inscription of the lagoons of New Caledonia on the World Heritage List, Annick Girardin celebrates this new step forward for New Caledonia.

Alongside its Pacific partners and with the full support of the French government, New Caledonia will extend its regional cooperation and its actions for youth, sustainable development, knowledge, cultural diversity and- the promotion and protection of oceans and underwater heritage.
