Working Holidays Visas

This is a multiple-entry non-extendable visa. It takes two weeks to process from the date of your visa appointment and is valid for 12 months. You can apply up to three months before your planned arrival in France.

If you hold this visa, you may travel to other Schengen Zone countries for up to 3 months in any 6 month period.

Participants are not eligible to receive any unemployment or social welfare benefits while in France.

Holidaymaking in France must be the main purpose of the stay. The working holiday visa cannot be issued for any other purpose (e.g. joining your partner in France, studying, working as an Au Pair, finding long-term employment or obtaining a rugby contract).

The status of the working holiday visa cannot be changed during the stay.

This visa agreement does not apply to New Caledonia, French Polynesia or for any of the French Overseas Territories.

For New Zealanders

You can apply at the French Embassy in Wellington if:

1. You are a citizen of New Zealand
2. You are aged 18 to 30 the day of your application appointment
3. You haven’t already applied for this type of visa
4. You want to travel and work in France
5. You have no dependent children or relatives
6. You have enough money to support yourself while in France

Documents you’ll need

Note that the Visa Section will not make any photocopies for you.

1. Passport valid for at least three months after your return date

2. Photocopies of the photo page of your passport + previous Schengen visas

3. Completed and signed long stay application form with one recent passport photograph

4. Proof of financial stability (bank statement, property ownership). A minimum of 2500 Euros is required.

5. A cover letter in English explaining why you wish to go to France

6. Proof of subscription of insurance for one year covering health care (including hospitalization and repatriation).
Note that it is very important to take out an insurance policy which covers you for your entire stay in France as you may not be eligible for the French social security system.

7. Proof you are in possession of a valid passport and a return ticket, or a ticket to a country where you are guaranteed admission, or you have sufficient resources to purchase such a ticket.

8. A pre-paid and trackable return envelope with your address in New Zealand

9. The long stay visas fees. Payment exclusively by EFTPOS.

Lodging your application

- You’ll need to book an appointment at the Consulate in Wellington via the online booking system New Zealanders can apply only at this consulate.
- One appointment must be made for each passport holder.
Applicants will not be admitted to the Consulate if they do not have an appointment.
If applicants are unable to attend an appointment they should amend or cancel it via the online booking system

For Australians

You can apply at the French Embassy in Wellington if:

1. You are a citizen of Australia residing in New Zealand at the time of your application
2. You are 18 to 35 of age when you apply for your visa
3. You haven’t already applied for this type of visa
4. You want to travel and work in France
5. You are in good health
6. You have no dependent children or relatives
7. You have enough money to support yourself while in France

Documents you’ll need

Note that the Visa Section will not make any photocopies for you.

1. Passport valid for at least three months after your return date

2. Photocopies of the photo page of your passport + previous Schengen visas

3. Proof of your residence in New Zealand

4. Completed and signed long stay application form with one recent passport photograph

5. Proof of financial stability (bank statement, property ownership). A minimum of 2500 Euros is required.

6. A cover letter in English explaining why you wish to go to France

7. A medical certificate saying you are "fit to work"

8. A recent copy of Australian and New Zealand criminal records

9. Proof of subscription of insurance for one year covering health care (including hospitalization and repatriation).

Note that it is very important to take out an insurance policy which covers you for your entire stay in France as you may not be eligible for the French social security system.

10. Copy of your travel itinerary or booked flights – we need to see your date of arrival in France

11. A pre-paid and track able return envelope with your address in New Zealand

3. You haven’t already applied for this type of visa
4. You want to travel and work in France
5. You have no dependent children or relatives
6. You have enough money to support yourself while in France

4. You want to travel and work in France
5. You are in good health
6. You have no dependent children or relatives
7. You have enough money to support yourself while in France
8. You have no criminal record
