74th session of the United Nations General Assembly [fr]

The 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened at the UN headquarters in New York on 17 September 2019.

The general debate starts on Tuesday 24 September. Throughout the week, the Heads of State and government and other high-ranking national officials will present their priorities and discuss international issues.

A major international encounter

During the General Assembly, multiple side-events will give leaders the opportunity to discuss the challenges facing our planet and the multilateral solutions that can be brought to bear on them:

many events will address multilateral responses to the main challenges of our planet:

  • Global issues: climate and environment, sustainable development, reducing poverty and fighting against inequalities, education, migrations
  • UN reform: The latest crises have confirmed the central importance of the UN while also highlighting the need to make the organization more efficient and more representative of current global balances.
  • Crisis prevention and management
  • Human Rights

A unique expression of multilateralism

The United Nations General Assembly, which was created in 1945, is one of the main bodies of the UN, bringing together all 193 Member States. It sets out the UN’s broad lines of action.

The Assembly adopts resolutions which help establish standards and codify international law, on the basis of representativeness (1 State = 1 vote) and debate (forum for negotiations and discussion).

It also decides on the organization’s internal operations: it admits new members upon recommendation of the Security Council, it examines and approves the budget, and it appoints the UN Secretary-General upon recommendation of the Security Council.
