United Nations - Ms Audrey Azoulay Elected as UNESCO Director-General (13 October 2017) [fr]
Statement by Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs
I welcome Ms Audrey Azoulay’s election to the position of UNESCO Director-General at a time when the organization is facing historic challenges.
It is now time for Member States to come together around Ms Azoulay’s project to ensure UNESCO focuses on its key missions: disseminating knowledge, promoting quality education for all, protecting the heritage of humanity and the environment, empowering women and girls. France promotes strong and responsible multilateralism capable of meeting the challenges of our time.
France wishes for UNESCO to serve the peace and sustainable development objectives which lie at the heart of the United Nations project.
I wish to pay tribute to Irina Bokova who has risen to the numerous challenges with which she has been confronted during her two mandates at UNESCO. I also wish to commend the other candidacies and the high-quality projects promoted by our partners.
